Elgen 497 m asl

Far out by the open sea, with views towards Grytøya and the midnight sun. The mountain covers most wind directions, with separate launches for PG and SPG. Great for soaring and evening trips.

Before you launch

Power line by the chapel A power line on poles crosses the landing field by the chapel. Check the landing before you fly.
Sea breeze from the north Can give strong turbulence and wind shear, often together with low fog clouds. Little wind on the mountain can mean a lot of wind at the landing.
Strong wind and downdraught Watch out for too much wind. A downdraught (katabatic wind) can come over Aunskardet down towards the landing on the south side.

Launch

The launches are around the east summit (506 m asl). The east side is often thermal in the morning and before noon in sunshine.

  • NNEESESSWWNW PG PG covers all directions and can launch all over the mountain. The launches are obvious when you reach the top. W and NW give steady ridge lift, good for soaring.
  • NEESESSW SPG SPG primarily takes off on the south side of Elgen. Towards E and SE there is a cliff launch east of the east summit.

Landing

When launching south, both PG and SPG land in the field below the SE launch, on the sea side of the road west of the westernmost house in Aun. Clear use with the neighbour, and before haymaking: land at the edge. The flagpole with a pennant on the farm shows the wind, and the neighbour likes to see people fly.

When launching north, you usually land in the field by the chapel at Elgsnes, where the car is parked. A power line on poles crosses the field, so check the landing before you fly. Occasionally people land on the foreshore at the far end of Elgsnes.

Always check the landing before you fly. If you land in a field, it must be agreed with the farmer, and the grass must not be tall.
